Daffodils – are a type of flower that is known for its bright yellow buds and petals. They are typically in bloom from February to April, but can differ depending on the weather conditions. Daffodil flowers look similar to lilies, but they’re actually part of the narcissus family. The name “daffodil” actually comes from the Latin word for “trumpet”, which describes how their shape resembles an old-fashioned trumpet.
Daffodils come in many different sizes and colors—from white to orange and even pink! They also have different shapes, including ones that are trumpet-shaped like a tulip or cup-shaped like a lily. Some types of daffodils also have multiple petals per flower head (like Tulipa sylvestris), while others only have one or two (like Narcissus jonquilla).
Gerbera Daisies – are one of the most popular flowers to give as a gift. They’re also known as Gerbera jamesonii, or “African Daisy.” They were named after Dr. Gerber, who first discovered them in South Africa.
Gerbera daisies are often confused with roses, but they actually belong to the same family as carnations and dahlias—the Asteraceae family. The blooms have five petals (like roses), but those petals are much bigger than those on a rose—and they’re usually bright pink or orange. The center of the flower is usually yellow or white. Gerberas have a lot more going on than just their showy appearance: they’re also very fragrant! Their scent can be described as sweet and fruity, but it’s not overpowering like some other flowers’ scents can be.
Ranunculus – are a type of flower that have a particularly striking appearance, with a showy, star-shaped bloom. They are often associated with the color pink, but can also be found in shades of purple and yellow. Our design staff loves to blend these gorgeous blooms into arrangments with other floral varieties. We use them in a number of designs, and often feature them in event and wedding flower arrangements.
While rununculus look like other flowers on the outside, they have a distinctive structure on the inside. Rununculus are actually tubers (the root system) that grow off of bulbs. The bulb is planted in soil, while the tubers grow at an angle from the bulb underground; they eventually reach the surface of the soil and form flowers above ground. This unique structure allows rununculus to produce flowers continuously throughout the growing season; unlike many other flowers that only bloom during certain times of year (such as roses), rununculus are available all year round!
